CANNES INFOS
The "CANNES FESTIVAL" CD-ROM will take you to all
the great moments of its life since its origins and will bring
you that rare feeling of living again all the emotions in a
lifetime.
With more than 4000 films on record and thousands of
photographs to discover which certainly include photos of
your preferred stars, more than 30 minutes of video, all the
information you'll ever need concerning the Cannes
Festival Prizes, this is the ultimate resource in the process
of discovery or the study in-depth of a rich and prestigious
past.
The Encyclopedia will make it possible for you to instantly
spot a piece of information on a preferred star, a film, a
director, a country...
All research subjects and criteria are possible, and you may
even test your knowledge of the Seventh Art with QUIZ.
1.SETUP
1.1 Video for Windows
If Video for Windows is already in your computer, the CD-
ROM setup procedure will bypass its installation.
If you can't see any video, you may then install the version
of Video for Windows provided with the CD-ROM, but
you will have to do it manually:
Use the "Run" command in the File menu of the File
Manager with the name of the file to run written as
d:\VFW\SETUP.EXE.
1.2 Configuration.
This CD-ROM adapts to the type of display in your
configuration, choosing automatically between 256,
32,000, or 16.7 million colors.
To obtain a good display quality, 32,000 or 64,000 colors
should be enough. In order to watch the CD-ROM on full
screen, in full color and motion, the screen resolution must
not be greater than 640 x 480 pixel.

When you see a menu of different options, just place the
cursor on the option that interests you and click once to
select it.
When you see the arrows in margins of text, click on them
to scroll the text up or down page by page.
When you see the down arrow in the margins of a text or
photo, click on it to continue. You will find you can do this
all the time during the exploration of this CD-ROM.
When you see a movie, you may click on it at any time to
freeze the frame.
If you don't use the direct way out of an option, you may
wish to click on the 'previous' icon, which is at the right
bottom of the screen, and which represents the steps of the
backstairs.
4.1. The Awards
For each year, you may discover all the Prizes awarded.
When you choose this option the first screen gives you the
film which got the Palme d'Or. A menu will then offer more
options.
4.2. The City of Cannes
A menu shows the different options. To get out of an
option, click on the 'previous' icon which you will find at
the right bottom of the screen.
4.3. The Stars
First select the year you choose; then click on the STARS
option. Photos of the stars will fill your screen. While the
cursor is on a photo, it becomes a binocular which you may
use to zoom in. To zoom out, click again on the photo. You
may do this with any photograph.
4.4. The Encyclopedia
The Encyclopedia gives you every bit of information you
are looking for, using any one of the different searching
strategies or combinations thereof. To do a query, you
should first choose this searching strategy and then launch
the query. Several levels or information layers exist for
each film, starting from a simple mention of the title and
the director (this is especially the case for short films) , to a
detailed summary with photos for the most important
films.
The following three searching strategies are available:
4.4.1. Search by "Film Title" and "Year".
To type in the name of the film, put the cursor inside the
corresponding data entry area, and click. Type the title you
are searching for. You need not type the whole title. The
first word, or even the first letters would do. Do not type in
articles like "The", etc. You may want to combine two
criteria in your search, like the title and the year.
4.4.2. Search by "Personality".
Proceed as if you were looking for a film, but type in the
data entry area which corresponds to personalities. These
'personalities' include actors, directors, producers, and
many others. You will obtain the Cannes filmography
(names and dates of films presented at the Cannes Festival)
if you search for an actor or a director, then the film
technical data and so on.
4.4.3. Search by "Country" and "Prize"
Click on the name of the country; (the vertical scroll bars
and the up and down arrows will allow you to pan the
current viewing window and quickly scroll your list). The
same procedure applies to the search by prize (if you don't
want to run a search by prize, just select the option "all
films").
After having indicated to the CD-ROM databases what is
your choice of research strategy, you have to launch the
search by clicking "SEARCH". Since a great number of
films are in the database, this search may take from one to
several seconds. After this search time is over, the
resulting list (of films or personalities) is displayed in a
window on screen. Using this list choose one item
according to your particular interest and you'll then have
the option to access all the technical data related to that
item when you click the "Technical Data" card icon.
If one or several photos are available for the item, click the
"Photo" icon to see them.
You may use the Encyclopedia by itself, as a stand alone
reference, or as hypermedia, as a cross-reference while you
scroll other options such as AWARDS or STARS. If, for
instance, you zoom into a STAR's photograph, the
Encyclopedia simultaneously 'opens' at that star's name.
Or, if you have a look into the AWARDS, the
Encyclopedia brings the film you are reading about to a
position which makes it convenient for you to access the
film data immediately. Just click "SEARCH", then select
the film to discover its "Technical Data" card and the
corresponding photos.
4.5. The CANNES FESTIVAL
Different options are offered in the menu. To leave the
option once you've selected it, click on the 'previous' icon
which you will find at the right bottom of the screen.
4.6. The FILM MARKET
When you click on this option, you will discover the
surprizing world of film marketing. Scroll the text by
clicking the up and down arrows.
4.7. The QUIZ
You may test your knowledge on a series of 20 questions.
The questions are different every time you enter QUIZ. So,
why don't you take the challenge and score 20/20? Enjoy,
and good luck!
4.8. The FESTIVAL LIFE
Choose the year. Then click on this option and a series of
photos, videos, film posters, textual comments, will appear.
At any moment you may click on the 'previous' icon, which
you will find at the right bottom of the screen, to stop and
get out of this option.
4.9. EXIT
To exit this CD-ROM, click on the "out" icon, on the upper
left of the screen.
